Scientific Basis of Management
Sustainable forest management is the planned and monitored use of the forest to reconcile biodiversity conservation, ecosystem services and income generation. It is based on technical and scientific criteria: inventories describe species, stocks and growth rates; planning defines harvest areas, cutting intensity and cycles; and reduced-impact logging organizes directional felling, the opening of skid trails and the protection of waterways and soils to maintain ecosystem structure and functionality.
Harvesting is selective: only part of the trees of commercial age and dimensions of target species are extracted, preserving seed trees and surrounding individuals. Post-harvest activities include monitoring natural regeneration, seed dispersal, fauna dynamics and gap recovery, ensuring that the forest maintains habitat, productivity and resilience. These practices are supported by studies conducted at Fazenda São Nicolau and by academic partners – scientific articles, reports and guides are available in the site’s Scientific Library.
