The Carbon Sink Project
The Multi-Species Reforestation in Mato Grosso, Brazil, also known as the Carbon Sink, is a pioneering project in Brazil. It began in 1999 with the planting of more than 2.5 million trees in degraded pasture areas at Fazenda São Nicolau. Today, more than 50 native species occupy almost 2,000 hectares.
Certified by Verra/VCS (ID 665) in the ARR category, the project has already sequestered more than 700,000 tonnes of CO₂eq and is expected to exceed 1 million by 2038. It is one of the few large-scale reforestation projects using native Amazonian species.
In addition to carbon sequestration, the project contributes to ecological restoration, the generation of scientific knowledge and the strengthening of productive chains and local public policies.
